The Mark of Jesus  

Christians need to be aware of how our actions look to the world, we also need to stand firm in the faith and be ready always to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence. (1 Peter 3:15). That is a summation of what this book is about. The Authors teach much to be considered, studied, and thought about. The book covers the Bible’s meaning of ‘love’ and how we as Christians are to love our neighbors, even when it seems impossible, and gives reasonable and scriptural examples to apply.

The book goes over the biblical definition of evangelical ‘unity’, and tells us “Unity” must be based upon the truths found in scripture, and not for purely humanistic reasons.” Some very good points were made in this chapter that are worthy of further study. It also covers how to respond when the world calls us hypocrites. Christians are to be living lives of peace and righteousness that testify to the redeeming power of Christ. This in fact shows that we as Christians bear the mark of Jesus.

Observable ‘love’ is seen by how Christians treat one another before a watching world. Most Christians will tell you they believe in The Fundamentals of The Christian Faith, (those things which are essential to our beliefs from biblical principles ). But they are quick to be divisive when it comes to agreeing that they are not fundamentalists! Some Christians mistakenly have taken the position that believing the ‘Fundamentals’ that are taught from scripture, makes them an Extremist, which is far from the case and is not an accurate appraisal. The authors point out that Evangelicals in the last recent decade don’t want to be associated with the name; “Fundamentalists” or “Fundamentals of the Faith,” but the ‘Fundamentals of the Faith are and have been a distinguishing quality of Christianity and Evangelicalism.

Timothy George is the founding Dean of Beeson Divinity School and a Professor. He has written more than 20 books and regularly contributes to scholarly journals, and is a popular conference speaker.

John Woodbridge is research professor of Church History and the History of Christian Thought at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois and is the author of many books.

This book is about the extensive and disturbing research done by 2 authors that explain the ever increasing problem of cultural narcissism. I will say right here that there is some good research, but some information that we do not agree with in the book. This book’s subject caught our attention in light of what the bible says the world will be like just before Christ returns, that evil will increase. In 2 Timothy 3:1-4 it says: “But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather then lovers of God,”

The book covers many of the social affects selfishness has on relationships, business, the economy, family, child-rearing/development, and how this effects the society as a whole. The research in this area of the book was exceptional and went into much detailed accounts. One of the more interesting points was that technology is making ‘nar-Sin-ism’ flourish!

This book is psychology based, but we found the research interesting reading. Chapter 4 ‘How did we get here? Lays out the origins of the epidemic. The book even goes into the Banking/financial and mortgage crisis and how selfishness and greed played into the economical collapse. They show how entitlement is the key culprit, and that with each generation ‘self-admiration’ has increased to dangerous levels. From a Christian perspective section 4 - prognosis/treatment, would NOT be recommended reading.

Narcissism is described as feeling superior to others and entitled, lacking a deep-connection to others, using people for your own ends, bragging, cheating, and manipulative with little concern for others, and is ‘Self-Worship’, at the very least it is an inflated view of the Self. There is also a section in the book that discusses parenting and when parents treat their children as ‘princesses’ and princes’ how this contributes to an inflated view of Self and spoils the child and as they grow older will cause them to have an attitude of entitlement.

Although the authors write that narcissism is a disease, the Bible calls it - selfishness or self-centeredness, which is not a disease at all, but is a Sin. It is a condition of our fallen nature, and is why we need a Savior. They point out the difference between self-confidence and narcissism and say; “There is a difference between narcissism and self-confidence, feeling ‘special is Narcissism - not self-esteem, not self-confidence and not something we should be building into our children.” Feeling special is unlikely to lead to ’respect for others’, and of course, they don’t have to obey the rules.

On pg. 76 they say; “When children are overindulged, it leads to outcomes resembling the ’seven deadly sins’: Pride, wrath, envy, sloth, gluttony, lust, and greed.” On this point, they refer back to psychology for a diagnosis, but the Bible has various passages throughout that lists these as ’sins of the flesh’ Galatians 5:19-21, and in verse 22, tells believers to put on the fruit of the Spirit.

The book does touch on the subject of Religion, and they do recognize it’s benefits to combating the narcissism epidemic and agree that they teach a moral ethic and ’selfless’ life. The Authors do mention Joel Olsteen and his misguided teachings on ’loving yourself’ as an example of NOT producing what it claims to do.

An Insightful Parable

O Shepherd Where art thou?

Uniquely written with a Parable or (story) on one page, and the author’s impressions and perceptions on the opposite page. Although the story is written in a humorous fashion, the story takes a serious examination of the popular church-growth movement and it’s detrimental impact on Pastors and congregations. The Parable demonstrates that competitiveness and ambition for success can leave the flock unattended for and neglected.

Calvin Miller writes on the topic of the mega church-growth movement/CEO concepts being used to draw the crowds into the Church, and how it is structured to meet the needs of the Pastor.

The metaphoric Narrative takes a dramatic turn when the Pastor in the story comes upon a seriously injured truck-driver who is dying and the Pastor realizes that it is more important to stay connected to the lives of his people who are hurting, sick, and suffering, then to promote his ambitions for a large church and personal popularity. The Author conveys why Pastors may be drawn to this type of program and what Pastors struggle with in their vocation, which was insightful.

This author supports Contemplative teachers which the writer promotes in the book. For a deeper understanding on the concerns about the contemplative prayer movement, Ray Yungen’s book - A Time of Departing is very helpful.

Standing Strong - Stand Firm in the Faith

This is a powerfully written book by Pastor John MacArthur that brings clarity about the spiritual warfare movement. He has done the homework for people to understand a movement that is laden with errors, distorting the scripture, and is steeped in sensationalism. These teachings are captivating a “bored with scripture” audience, and it’s teachings are currently being militantly advanced in the Church today. Seminars, books, DVD’s, and conferences abound, and Christians are flocking to learn the newest techniques. But true spiritual warfare isn’t about skill or techniques, but is about true ’spiritual character‘. (pg. 87-89)

Standing Strong is an excellent book addressing this popular movement on it’s beliefs and practices, and then give the reader the answers that are needed. The book is designed as a bible study aid for personal or small group study. A study guide is at the back of the book. MacArthur helps the reader to discern fact from fiction, and how to be well-balanced when studying these spiritual warfare techniques, practices and experiences, and does this by examining them with scripture.

This movement is advancing rapidly, due to poor doctrinal teaching, books and popular teachers within the church. This book will help to sort out the doctrinal confusion that is occurring. One of the key problems is: a shallow view of salvation, and sanctification. The author takes the popular teachings and dismantles them with the truth found in the Bible and gives the true meaning of the gospel and what sanctification really is in comparison to the distorted doctrines that are being taught and believed.

The Great Evangelical Disaster

The Last Apologetic
 

Francis Schaeffer’s most classic work is a call to the Evangelical church of it’s need to remain biblical, and is just as important reading for the Christian today as it was when the book was first published in 1984. Schaeffer’s message is that with the Reformation many came to Christ with the absolutes based on biblical form found in the bible, and it became widely known and great freedom came out of that. But in  the early part of the 20^th century - that Freedom became Autonomous, self-directed, and self-governing, and over time biblical form and the Christian consensus lacked constraint.
 

In explaining the moral breakdown of our times, Francis Schaeffer says this; “The titanic freedoms which we once enjoyed have been cut loose from their Christian restraints and are becoming a force of destruction leading to chaos. And when this happens, there really are very few alternatives. All morality becomes relative, law becomes arbitrary, and society moves towards disintegration. In personal and social life, compassion is swallowed up by self-interest…“When the memory of the Christian consensus which gave us freedom within the biblical form is increasingly forgotten, a manipulating authoritarianism will tend to fill the vacuum. At this point the words ‘right’ and ‘left’ will make little difference. They are only two roads to the same end, the results are the same. An elite, authoritarianism as such, will gradually force form on society so that it will not go into chaos-and most people would accept it.” (pg 23)
 

The distinctly Christian position of Knowledge, moral and spiritual truths of God’s word were being compromised in the church, and accommodation to the world’s thinking gave way to the spirit of the age, as liberal theology entered the Church, while notable scholars such as J. Gresham Machen who stood firm in the battle for biblical truth and biblical inerrancy were being silenced and driven out. It comes down to this; are we obeying the scriptures? Because this is the real test of our faith and lives in Christ and rather we believe the bible. This is not just a theological debate, but practical and obedient living.
 

Schaeffer reminds us again that “the whole world is under the control of the evil one” 1 John 5:13), and that Christians seem to have forgotten this, and spend little time considering this in relation to our daily lives in this world and how this relates to the culture’s effect on our church teaching and doctrine and urges the reader to stand firm on God’s Word and not succumb to the temptation of compromise and accommodation of worldly thinking.

Dr. Francis A. Schaeffer is widely recognized as one of the most influential Christian thinkers of our day. He wrote over 23 books which were translated into 25 languages and have sold over 3 million copies. Quitting Church

The Author attempts to explain why so many Christians still remain faithful yet dissatisfied and disconnected from the established church. The case histories of those included in the book were insightful, poignant and revealing. Julia Duin explores factors that are causing a shift in why people are leaving churches. The data is impressive. She delves into trends and fads like: house-churches, emergent congregations and postmodernism. This book is not convincing when it presented these options as opposed to traditional churches.

In her statistical data she shows how 78 million protestants don’t go to church, and states in her research that people are simply not being pastured. She writes about her own experience of being churchless and her struggle to find a church from her Charismatic background. Unfortunately she endorses charismatic- extremist teachers from the signs and wonders movement as good models in the book, which we didn’t find helpful.

Her conclusions and remedy for the problems given at the end of the book--she suggests going back to the ’covenant community movement’ like in the 70’s, to which she was a part of. She writes favorably of the house-church movement. This isn’t the best answer for the situation, especially from what has already been well-documented of the past record of the (Shepherding discipleship Movement) blunders and abuses that occurred in the 70‘s and 80‘s, and still would be troublesome today if it’s practices were repeated in today’s church. Two such books that document these movements are ‘Drift into Deception’, and also see the book ‘Damaged Disciples’).

Christless Christianity

The Author communicates what he believes is the problem that is diminishing Christ from His prominent place in the Church, and in the heart and minds of Christians. One concern that he writes about is ‘Moralistic Therapeutic Deism’ in it’s various forms being promoted and practiced within the Church.

 

 

Michael Horton says: “My aim is not to target any particular wing, movement, person, or group. We are all victims as well as accomplices in our captivity. In fact, my sense of urgency is motivated by my impression that ‘Christless Christianity’ is pervasive, crossing the conservative-liberal spectrum and all denominational lines.”

What really caught our attention on the reading of this book, was how it shows that humanistic thinking is really down playing what Christ did for us. It’s like Christianity is becoming a works-based approach to know God, and not that we are God’s creation, and desperately deprived and that God stepped in and rescues us at the Cross by what Jesus Christ did for us. This is the Good News that needs to be shared and proclaimed.

Some of the concerns Michael Horton raises is how the Church in America is obsessed with being successful and relevant, and is mirroring the world without holding to the scriptures instruction to be holy and set apart unto God. He writes: “The church has repackaged itself that it can satisfy the masses. The church has become similar to many secular programs and self-help groups, becoming shallow and human centered.”
 

The author covers many of the current efforts of the Church’s use of programs and methods to recapture people’s hearts for God, and shows how these attempts have done little to bring Christians back to centering their focus on Christ and his finished work of redemption. The Author also discusses current popular authors and Evangelical teachers that are using psychology and new age teachings that distort the meaning of the Christian Faith. He is descriptive and thorough in his explanations of why this raises concerns.

Michael Horton shows how these methods and programs cause the Christian to be distracted from the simplicity of Christ. Paul warned us from the Bible to be on guard against such things: 2 Cor. 11:3 “But I am afraid that , as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be lead astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.”

 Some notable statements Horton addresses in the book deserve thoughtful reflection by Christians: On page 19) “The bible is mined for ‘relevant’ quotes but is largely irrelevant on it’s own terms; God is used as a personal resource rather then known, worshipped, and trusted; Jesus Christ is a coach with a good game plan for our victory rather than ‘Savior’.

On page 24) The Author asks the questions; “Does Christ come merely to improve our existence…Is Christianity all about spiritual and moral makeovers or about death and resurrection?…Is the Word of God a resource for what we have already decided we want and need, or is it God’s living active criticism of our religion, morality, and pious experience? In other words, is the Bible God’s story, centering on Christ redeeming work that rewrites our stories, or is it something we use to make our stories a little more exciting and interesting?

There was a good section in the book where the author shows how some people use the bible subjectively and allegorically which leads to misunderstanding of the scriptures.

Stand Firm and run with Perseverance

Stand: A Call for the Endurance of the Saints  

This book gives the reader a candid look at the lives of 4 Pastors and one author in missionary outreach, as they share how in their lives and ministries they have endured trials, persevered through suffering and challenges, and how their faith enduring faith and commitment to God, Prayer, and love for God’s word --sustained them in some of the more trying and difficult times in their lives. Because each Pastor’s experience of endurance in life’s suffering and difficulties is different, it makes this book interesting reading.

Contributing Authors in this book are: John MacArthur, John Piper, Jerry Bridges, Randy Alcorn, Helen Rosereare and Justin Taylor. There are some very beautiful and poignant moments in this book that bring the real impact of suffering and it’s distress to the surface and shows how these Pastors handled these events in their lives. This book will make you grow in your faith and brings renewed strength in your resolve to serve Jesus.

Outside of the mention of a few books (some of the authors) used as references in their chapters that we would not recommend for discernment reasons, the book was written well. This book effectively does what it sets out to do and that is, to encourage the believer to Stand Firm in the midst of trials, and endure and persevere through to the end till we meet our Lord Jesus Christ.

Growing by Grace

There are far too few books written on this vital aspect of the Christian life that are biblically based and theologically sound. Sanctification is not an option according to the Bible. ( 1 Peter 1:2 and 1 Thess 4:3a says: “For this is the will of God, your sanctification.” as well as many other related verses.) Sanctification isn’t prudish or legalistic, but is a necessary factor in having a right relationship with God, and brings satisfying and harmonious relationship with others.

A lack of Sanctification is an internal-outward problem that eventually effects all our relationships, but especially our relationship with God. The author tells us that Sanctification is a complex process-and is a divine/human activity. Rather then having a yield only-Holy Spirit does everything opinion of Sanctification, the author teaches that believers have a responsibility in obeying along with surrendering or yielding to the Holy Spirit’s power in their lives.

Jay Adams discusses how this much neglected subject of Sanctification in Christian living and teaching has caused much trouble in believer’s failed victories in overcoming sin and has at times in church history attributed to bad theology and practice on the subject of sanctification. He expanses on this by writing about the quietist movement and how total reliance on ‘surrender’ is not as reliable and brings far less results in conquering sin’s effect in the life of the believer.

Although the book is written for counseling, it is far more useful and necessary for any believer to read if they are seeking a deeper walk and relationship with God that will be lasting and fruitful. Many aspects of being born again and living the Christian life in regard to sanctification are discussed in this short and easy reading book. We thank Pastor Fisher for recommending this book to us several years ago.

Hurling Toward Oblivion

The author Richard Swenson is a physicist that writes on possible end-time scenarios. The terminology and concepts used in the book can get a little monotonous at times during the reading, but understand he is writing this way for good reason. There are some insightful nuggets to be mined from this book.

Richard A. Swenson, M.D. is a physician and a futurist. He holds a B.S. in physics from Denison University, he has also taught at the University of Wisconsin Medical School. Dr. Swenson conducts research and writes about the intersection of culture, health, faith and the future. He is a highly requested speaker.

A Window on Eternity

One Minute After You Die

Yes, Erwin Lutzer gives here a book that will answer some of the most pressing questions people have about death and what happens when you die from a biblical perspective. The first chapter handles the issue of reincarnation and people who try to contact the dead, and shows how these misled ideas may open people to demonic spirits posing as whoever they think they may be contacting.

He takes the reader through a clear definition of what is Heaven, Hell, and Hades, and what the Bible says about these places. He defines the Judgment for unbelievers and the Judgment seat of Christ for believers. As in most of his books, his compassionate writing is well versed in Scripture. He touches briefly on suicide and other ethical issues. Eternity will be forever - get the facts now. A book that is meant to be shared with others.

The Cost of Deception

This was an interesting and helpful book. As deception continues to be on the increase, Hoaxes, urban legends, and rumors continue to circulate throughout Christiandom. As Christians we are to be a people of the Truth so what is true should matter to us. When what is true doesn’t matter anymore, what many Christians fail to realize is that it hurts the whole body of Christ.

This book takes a walk through some of the more common hoaxes and urban legends of the past that still continue to deceive and dupe Christians today. The author gives instruction on how to discern and avoid these falsified tales, legends, and old rumors and stories. Williams advises that by checking out the source, it can do much to dispel modern myths and the truthfulness of much of what is being circulated in the Christian community. He informs the reader that when Christians think that God only deals with them on an emotional level it causes a Christian to resist wise counsel and will leave that person open to deception.

A well-written testimony from Mormonism to Christ

Out of Mormonism : A Woman’s True Story - Judy Robertson

This was a very moving account of how a husband and wife get drawn into the Mormon Church. They find work with a nice couple and were attracted to their friend’s strong family values and the orderly manner of their lives appealed to them. They are introduced by their friends to the LDS Church. Once in the church, they were kept busy serving. Judy starts to reflect on contradictions she sees and starts to notice what she was experiencing in Mormonism was not about devotion to Jesus Christ, but was instead about devotion to the LDS church and it’s rituals, lessons and doctrines, etc. they began to see cracks in the foundations of Mormonism. They started to see LDS teaching a religion that requires works for salvation.

Each red flag in their mind they suppressed, while they saw what looked to be perfect people living perfect lives. But as their involvement progressed, they learn of the hidden stresses with those leaders who taught them and how they were trying to cope and living up to the impossible standards setup by the Mormon Church. The exclusive doctrines of LDS were starting to trouble Judy and her husband, as she and her husband were not finding what they were being taught in the bible. Once they seen God’s grace written about in the scriptures, that Salvation is not earned it is the gift of God Eph 2:8,9, what had been blinding them, now the Word of God reveal in the Bible brought them freedom and forgiveness for sin.

Judy recounts key insights of how she was introduced into the LDS church that gives the reader an illuminating look into Mormonism. The book is so well-written that it was hard to put down.

Spurgeon always humbly directs the focus on God and His word and brings the reader greater understanding into the riches of God’s grace and the meaning of our Salvation in Christ.

Spurgeon makes it very clear that God’s mercy and grace is not earned, but given freely - Eph 2:8,9 The chapters dealing with Salvation and Faith are extremely helpful. The book is written in a devotional format, so it is suitable for bible studies, or for your personal devotional time with the Lord. This book is a classic and a must read.

Driven Away by Purpose

An Examination Worth Reading

 This book is an examination of the purpose-driven life book, and also the 40 days of purpose and Rick Warren’s Peace Plan. The book also evaluates Richard Abanes 2005 book which was a defense of Rick Warren’s PDL church model, and it’s books and programs against it’s Critics. The Author of this book writes from his own experience of seeing the consequences of the Purpose-driven life movement within his own church in Singapore. Daniel Chew shows how the PDL teachings compromises the purity of doctrinal truth and in many cases is a False Gospel.

This Author takes a thorough examination of the PDL’s use of poor translations and in some cases mistranslations of the verses used in the Purpose-Driven Life book Warren uses to support points in his book. Evidence is given to show that Warren’s uses of Paraphrase Bible verses leads to a misunderstanding of the true intent of the verse and can distort a person’s understanding of Scripture. This book effectively shows that methods really can change the message and can be harmful.

One area that is most disturbing is PDL’s giving of the Gospel. Chew sites entries from the PDL book. The emphasis is on “Invitation” rather then a turning from and repentance of sin. The brokenness and godly sorrow that leads to Salvation (2 Cor. 7:10) is missing from repentance. PDL’s invitation is something less then the gospel requires. With this being the case the Author shows an example hypothetically of how a New Ager could still pray Warren’s prayer and still remain a New Ager.

One out of several important aspects the Author examines is: Warren’s denigration of doctrine and how his PDL church model elevates Unity above Truth. Daniel Chew quotes from the PDL book in making his points clear. He shows how there is an overemphasis on unity and relationships in promoting a protection of Warren’s Church model, and the purpose-driven life definition of “unity” is not the biblical definition of unity mentioned in the Bible. The PDL model of church does not allow disagreement centered on doctrine or discernment and leadership. In the PDL Church model - “Unity” becomes Militant and can be confrontational and truth is disregarded in the process. Compromise of the Faith becomes inevitable. We’ve read other books assessing the PDL movement, this book takes a much different approach showing the theological position within the purpose-driven movement.

This is one of the best dvds exposing the new unbiblical teachings on demonism of christians that has been popularized in the Christian Church today. These teachings regarding spiritual warfare and generational curses are being accepted by undiscerning Christians through ‘deliverance ministries’, and by some Christian counseling. Lorri MacGregor has researched well the biblical issues and errors from those who promote these teachings, and gives biblical answers why the Christian should not be duped into believing these distortions and errors.

The DVD shows how these extreme teachings come through a distinct theology and movements such as Kingdom Now, Dominion theology, Joel’s Army and other similar teachings where a Christian plays a dominant role over demons as well as playing a dominant role over the Christians they minister to. The DVD shows clearly how these error are promoted because of a poor biblical understanding of the verses they use.

Personal responsibility for sin is avoided and blame is put on the person’s past. But, the Bible does not support generational curses for Christians. Religious pride is also a factor with those promoting these unbiblical concepts. The DVD also shows a word study on some of the verses used by those who are involved and promoting these teachings, and will help assist you in your own personal study. The Drift into Deception

Avoiding a Drift into Deception

This is a must read book that warns believers that aberrant teachings can have a cult-like effect on a church and their members. The Author gives details of their personal encounter and heartbreaking experience when their Church drifted into aberrant teachings.

The Authors define an aberrant Christian group: “We may define an aberrant group as one which emerged from orthodox, mainstream Christianity, but differs from it in belief and practices in one or more essential ways. The word aberrant means “straying from the right or normal way; deviating from the usual or natural type.” An aberrant Christian group, then, is neither a cult nor an evangelical organization.” (from pg. 50)

They further go on to show some examples of groups that started out well in traditional evangelical Christianity and then somewhere along the way the leaders drifted into aberrant beliefs, and then progressed into heretical beliefs and practices, as well as the flock that follows them.

There are 2 excellent lists given in the book, one that describes the teachings, and another on the ‘common characteristics’, that gives these 8 warning signs of an aberrant group:

Charisma and pride

Anger and intimidation

Greed and fraud

Immorality

Enslaving authoritarian structure

Exclusivity Demands loyalty and honor

New extra-biblical revelations

There is also a section that shows some may use prophecy as a substitute for sound biblical teachings.

At the end of each chapter are questions for study and discussion of what was covered in the chapters. There are times when a person may need to consider leaving a church, and this book gives examples of that excellently, and gives practical instruction on how to find a good church. Also appreciated was the warnings given on (pg. 173) on finding a church: “Sometimes we don’t see the real fruit of an individual until we’re involved, and that takes time, observation, and evaluation.”

Discernment for every believer is not an option but is a command from Scripture (1 Thess 5:21). It is important to stand firm in our faith and not get discouraged, and to continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:17,18), regardless of the circumstances we may go through. If you should find yourself in this situation, this book is very helpful.

Our Sufficiency in Christ - John MacArthur

In this book the Author reminds us that the Bible provides for the believer ‘everything for life and godliness’ 2 Peter 1:3, and exhorts the reader how to apply the riches of Christ that is our inheritance at Salvation. To be in Christ is to have: wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. 1 Corth 1:30. His grace is supplied, we have every spiritual blessing. Eph. 1:3.

The author shows how major shifts in theology and practice have had various effects on the Church. In addressing Gnosticism, (defined as a heresy that causes people to seek hidden knowledge beyond what God has revealed in His word and through Christ.) John MacArthur shows how these old heresies are troubling the Church today, and are currently challenging the authority of Scripture and the Gospel. Modern believers are mixing God’s Word with psychology and mysticism.  He writes that people don’t go heretical all at once, “It is gradual. And they do not do so intentionally most of the time. They slip into it through shoddiness and laziness in handling the word of truth…a flashy new idea, along with a little laziness or carelessness or lack of precision in handling the truth of God.”

This book covers so much more then I have written here. This book is clearly a good book for Christian growth. Your faith will be strengthened. Recommended reading.

Finding Peace In Life's Storms

Encouragement for the Hurting and Weary

  The blessing of reading this book was having scriptural guidance to lead us through the storms of life. Psalms 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” God’s grace pours forth to comfort and guide us. Our faith is increase in Christ Jesus, and realize an abiding hope in God through life’s difficulties.

This beautifully written book by Charles Spurgeon would encourage anyone through hard times. It could bring healing and hope to a Christian or perhaps an unbeliever as well. Spurgeon brings scripture to bear on the heart of the soul that is hurting and weary.  This is by far one of our favorite books by Spurgeon.

 This is one of the most helpful and resourceful discernment books on New Age beliefs . The book gives comprehensive research on the New Age movement and it’s teachers and practices, and yet provides charts with brief descriptions and quick facts. Topics are easy to find at a glance. The content of the book is impressive and is well-researched.

There are charts at the end of most chapters that compare New Age beliefs and practices with Christianity which helps the reader to distinguish the differences. The book has been an extremely helpful resource for the times in which we live since new age practices have made there way into the Christian Church.

The Truth Behind the Secret

What's "The Secret" not telling you?  (This Review is based on the Book Format)

The book “The Secret” has been selling in the millions. Everyone from Oprah to Larry King have had the contributing teachers from the book as guest on their TV programs. This book really breaks down what the Secret is all about.

What you quickly discover by the 3^rd chapter of this book is--- the real secret is: who’s secret it was, (Hicks) and who’s message it originally belongs to. You learn that the message and teachings of “The Secret” is called: ’The Law of Attraction’ and was a channeled message through Esther Hicks by an Entity know as Abraham. Now how creepy is that?   Is this “Secret” really something a Christian wants to buy into? And if so, you just might get more than you bargained for. This and other spiritual concerns are discussed in this book.

Without a true understanding of Christian meditation, (which differs noticeably) from what is presented in “The Secret” a Christian could be easily mislead into metaphysical practices with harmful results. As the chapters go on, the Authors take the claims of health and prosperity made in the book “The Secret”, and examine the scientific claims of the “Law of Attraction” and reveal what a panel of Scientists have to say about this, and also examine the medical claims proposed by the book ‘The Secret’.

The Authors of this book reveal that: “The Secret” met it’s early success in the Mind Science churches, and at metaphysical bookstores. The authors write that TIME Magazine reported---"that before “The Secret” was a mainstream hit, it was selling briskly at New Age bookstores and New Thought Churches like Unity and Agape (Beckwith’s church)".

As to “The Secret’s origin of Religious teachings, it turns out that the booklist and the teachers Rhonda Byrne’s quotes in “The Secret” reveal almost all anyone needs to know. The teachings come out of the Mind Science religions, New Thought, and Christian Science and Unity. The doctrines practiced in Christian Science have been known to have dangerous consequences. Christian Science teaches that illness and suffering is an illusion. For the Biblical Christian, “The Secret” and it’s associated teachings should be Avoided. You can read the biblical warnings from the Bible from Deuteronomy 18:9-13.

There is a popular teaching these days that instructs people to seek within to hear the ‘voice of God’, they listen to their feelings promptings, and hunches to guide them in making life’s decisions, and listen to an ‘inaudible’, ‘inner voice‘, they say to know the ‘will of God’ for their lives.

This book will challenge the Christian reader’s said professed confidence in the word of God because once someone has omitted Scripture as the final authority, the person has no way left for truly testing or knowing if something is of God or not. This can become a serious situation for a Christian that very often makes them vulnerable to false teachings, confusion, and heartache.

When Jesus was tempted by the devil in Matt 4:4, He said; “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God”. In the 4^th chapter, 3 times Jesus says “It is written”. Scripture is the final authority.

The author has written an excellent book in a Q & A format that deals with the vital matter of hearing God’s voice, godly decision making, callings, and what God’s Will is for the Christian, and gives us a sound biblical way of obeying God’s Will and practicing biblical guidance in our lives. 2 Timothy 3:16,17 says: “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” The Scriptures are sufficient - and are a sure foundation.
