The Cross in the Shadow of the Crescent - By Erwin Lutzer

http://www.christianbook.com/
Islam is on the rise all over the West, including America. In this compelling book, bestselling author Erwin Lutzer urges Christians to see this as both an opportunity to share the gospel and a reason for concern. We have now reached a tipping point--the spread of Islam is rapidly altering the way we live. These changes are cause for alarm, for they endanger our freedoms of speech and religion.

At the same time, this opens an incredible door of ministry for Christians, for Muslims normally do not have access to the gospel in their own lands.  In The Cross in the Shadow of the Crescent, readers will discover helpful answers to these questions and more:

•How does Islam's growing influence affect me personally?
•In what ways are our freedoms of speech and religion in danger?
•How can I extend Christ's love to Muslims around me?

This sensitive, responsible, and highly informative must-read will not only equip you to better relate to your Muslim friends, neighbors, and coworkers, but will also encourage you with the reminder that ultimately the enduring truth of the cross will prevail.

A New Earth An Old Deception

Featured heavily on Oprah and touted by critics and readers alike, A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle is finding a huge following in the culture. Promoting ideas and beliefs that seem godly and good, this bestselling book is wrapping the country in a cocoon of sound spirituality. Or is it?

It may sound right---almost Christian, in fact---but something isn't quite right says Richard Abanes, the author of such books as The Truth Behind the Da Vinci Code. Equipping Christians with biblical answers and viewpoints, Abanes helps believers---as well as the curious---understand that Eckhart Tolle's message is dangerous.

Easy to read, A New Earth, An Old Deception is a concise refutation of the Oprah-promoted bestseller, providing a clear biblical response to this new age message. Topics include Tolle's misuse of Scripture, false teachings on God, the Bible's teaching on evil, A New Earth's version of salvation compared to God's plan, and much more.

Contending for the Faith

From the cover: “Recent years have seen an explosion of independent ministries claiming apostolic and prophetic offices. These new apostles and prophets are claiming the Church must come under their authority and direction in order to fulfill her end-time purpose. New doctrines and practices are being introduced into the Body at an alarming rate.

This book examines the claims and doctrines of the new apostles and prophets in the light of Biblical revelation and offers a response for the discerning Christian. “ Recommended Reading. One of the best new books on the subject.

“Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ…These are wandering starts for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.” Jude 3,4,12

Seeing A World of Difference

One or Two describes as "One-ism" and "Two-ism," the two ways of being spiritual.   One-ism believes that everything that exists is of one substance and that the goal of theology, spirituality and even sexuality is to destroy all distinctions, and bring all things together.

Two-ism believes that there is a God outside creation who made all that is not God and has structured creation for the good of humanity. Two-ism has implications in our theology, spirituality and sexuality.

The book is based on the argumentation of the apostle Paul in Romans 1. Peter Jones analyzes the current cultural expressions of spirituality in light of these two approaches.

About the Author
Peter Jones holds an MDiv from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, a ThM from Harvard divinity School, and PhD from Princeton Theological Seminary. Health, Wealth & Happiness

The desire for a thriving, healthy, and productive life is as strong as ever, especially in tough economic times. As people become more disillusioned at the state of the economy, they also become more susceptible to the lure of the prosperity gospel and its teachings of health, wealth, and happiness for the faithful. But what happens when the promise of prosperity overshadows the promise of the real gospel--the gospel of Christ?

Believing that the prosperity gospel is constructed upon faulty theology, authors David W. Jones and Russell S. Woodbridge take a closer look at five crucial areas of error relating to the prosperity gospel. In a fair but firm tone, the authors discuss the history and theology of the prosperity gospel movement to reveal its fraudulent core biblical teachings that have been historically and popularly misinterpreted, even by some of today's most well-known pastors. After an introduction and assessment of the movement, readers are invited to take a look at Scripture to understand what the Bible really says about wealth, poverty, suffering, and giving.

Theologically sound but acessible to all readers, Health, Wealth & Happiness: Has the Prosperity Gospel Overshadowed teh Gospel of Christ is sure to become a trusted resource for laypersons, pastors, and Christian leaders.

David W. Jones (Ph.D, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary) is associate professor of Christian ethics at Sputheastern Baptist Theological Seminary.  He is the author of more than a dozen articles and books that cover a wide range of moral issues.  His Ph.D is in the field of financial ethics.

Russell S. Woodbridge (Ph.D, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary) is an asistant professor of theology and church history currently engaged in missions work in Eastren europe.  He is a former vice-president for Equity Derivatives trading for Salomon Brothers AG in Frankfurt, Germany.

Stand Firm in the Faith and have a Biblical Worldview

Grave Influence 21 Radicals and Their Worldviews that Rule America from the Grave

Brannon Howse begins by writing that Christians must stand firm for righteousness and says; “lies have been cleverly packaged in positive masking terms but behind them remains a destructive spiritual agenda.” The Christian must stand firm in the faith and proclaim the truths found in scripture.

The author’s passion is to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ and to teach a biblical worldview. He believes the church can be reclaimed even if the culture can’t. At this point most Christians seem to know that Socialism is ravaging our country but may not know how we got to this point and where and who these ideas originated from. This book is an examination of 21 dead radicals, and their ideas, values and worldviews, and the influence they continue to have. Brannon Howse writes: “If you’re ready for this spiritual battle you’ll stand a better chance of keeping the faith, proclaiming the truth, standing firm for your family and it’s convictions, and enduring till the end.”

Part of this spiritual battle is--being equipped with a strong biblical worldview, this is what the author sets out to equip the reader with in this book. We encourage pastors, laymen, Sunday school teachers and parents to get this book and share this valuable information to fortify your faith and a biblical worldview. This book can be ordered at worldview weekend  at the website.

Brannon Howse is founder and president of Worldview Weekend Conference. Brannon is also the host of the radio talk show Worldview Matters and has served as the education reporter for the Michael Reagan Show for many years. He is the author of several books on Christian worldview issues.

A Book that Needs to be Read by Christians

When A Nation Forgets God - 7 Lessons We Must Learn
This is a timely book that addresses the concerns that are on the minds of many Christians today about the state our Country is in and where will we go from here. In the opening content of the book the Author states: “Back in the 1970’s Francis Schaeffer told us that one day we would wake up and discover that the America we once knew was gone.” that day is here. One does not have to be a prophet to see that dark days are coming to the United States. There are ominous signs that the freedoms we once assumed were ours are disappearing. Forces of secularism lead inevitably to a totalitarian state to which everyone is expected to submit.” (pg. 12)

Pastor Lutzer reminds us again of the precarious times in which we live by writing: “Francis Schaeffer used to tell us, people are willing to march down the wrong path if only they can be assured of personal peace and affluence. They willingly march forward, not asking where the path will lead.” (pg. 45, Chp. 2 subtitled: The Power of the economy)

This book is written to the believer and the church, we are not to react in an unbiblical way by what’s taking place in our nation, but what we are to be found doing is to be a creditable witness to the saving grace found in Christ. Lutzer says: “God is humbling us, that the political solutions that were suppose to rescue our nation from it’s moral and spiritual freefall have had scant effect. We are learning that the problem is deeper than we thought. In sum, we must realize that only God can save us from those trends that have already evoked His judgment. “ (From the introduction)

He writes that Nazi Germany has some lessons to teach us. The author writes that Nazism did not arise in a vacuum, that their were cultural streams that made it possible for the ideology to emerge, eventually gained wide acceptance by the popular culture of it’s time.

This book starts out very interesting, and ends in the same manner. Early on in the book, before even chapter 1 begins, Lutzer writes, “Today we face cultural pressures that are forcing us to combine Christ with other religions, or to combine Christ with a political or ideological agenda. The experience of the church Nazi Germany reminds us that Christ must always stand alone; He must be worshiped not as one who stands alongside the governmental leaders of this world, but as standing above them as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.” (pg 11) We must stand firm in our faith on the truths in the Bible in the midst of this gathering storm.

Erwin Lutzer reminds the reader: “that before Hitler moved to destroy the church, he decided to go make peace with it, and use it for his own ends.” (Chp. 1 pg. 18) The author goes on to give a brief history of the church and the people in these events and gives the reasons for why they conceded to do what they did.

Erwin Lutzer gives “Seven Lessons” in this book we can learn from
1. When God is separated from Government, Judgment folows
2. It’s always the economy
3. That which is legal might also be evil
4. Propaganda can change a Nation
5. Parents - not the State - are responsible for a child’s training
6. Ordinary heroes can make a difference
7. We must exalt the cross in the gathering darkness

In the final chapter titled: When a Nation forgets God - “We must exalt the cross in the gathering darkness”, what the Author writes is so amazingly accurate that it is worth quoting: “Here in America we have what many believe is a new phenomenon in the history of the church. In previous eras we have seen the gospel neglected or even mocked by religious liberals and nominal Christians - that is to be expected. What is different today is that the message of the Cross is being ignored even by those who claim to be saved by it’s message. At the very time when the gospel must be proclaimed most clearly, we are hearing muffled voices even from some of the great evangelical pulpits of our land. Christian books flood our markets that have little to do with the heart of the Christian message.” (pg. 136-137).

Pastor Erwin Lutzer is Senior Pastor of Moody Church in Chicago and is the Author of many books. This book is a MUST READ, and you will not put it down until you’ve finished it. I’m surprised this book isn’t in the top 10 Christian books. It is not a lengthy book, we found it to be a quick read and thought-provoking.

A Different Gospel

The ''name it, claim it'' theology of the Word Faith Movement is presented as biblical---but is it? In this compelling book,

McConnell documents the historical link between faith theology and New Thought metaphysics.

He then analyzes faith theology's doctrines of healing and prosperity as well as its understanding of the atonement of Christ to show how they deviate from biblical teaching.

Affirming and Important Reading

10 Lies about God: And the Truths That Shatter Deception
Purchased this book in October at our local Christian bookstore, and include it in the reviews here. We found this book to be excellent and important reading. It is one of the best books we’ve read this year, among some others.

The book has ‘real’ answers for spiritual seekers, and for those who have questions about Christianity, or more importantly about God., and what the Bible teaches, and also what the Bible does not teach as well. Lutzer explores some answers that are given for God that reveal half-truths and deceptive beliefs. There is a lot of misconceptions and opinions about God, and how God deals with man. This book covers these questions.

Erwin Lutzer is an accomplished Author, Pastor and Bible teacher. He is biblical in his approach to the questions that most often come our way as Christians from unbelievers and people of other religions and faiths, and is well equipped to instruct, teach and give answers to the questions of people who do not believe in Christ as Savior of the world. The book is an exceptional volume that is an apologetic, as well as it is strengthening reading for the long-time or mature Christian.

The Author searches the deeper questions of our faith and aids the reader in being able to know the Savior, grow in discernment so you are able to stand firm in the faith, and equip your witness for Christ to be effective with well reasoned answers. (1 Peter 3:15). There is a study guide in the back, with questions that will assist the reader with questions for each chapter that will help you retain what you’ve read, and can also be useful as a helpful guide for churches and bible study groups.

Erwin W. Lutzer  has been Senior Pastor of Moody Church in Chicago for over 30 years and has written numerous books. He is also featured speaker on Moody Network daily radio broadcast “Running to Win.” Running to win radio - http://www.oneplace.com/ministries/running-to-win/  and is the author of many Christian books.

What Oprah is Teaching Millions About Spirituality

“O” God: A Dialogue on Truth and Oprah’s Spirituality

A book that has a unique apologetic approach to addressing the Spirituality that is promoted by Oprah Winfrey and her many guests she’s had over the years. The book is a dialogue of two women that are huge fans of Oprah and their journey to find the truth.

Pantheism and Eastern Spirituality has been steadily rising in the West, thanks in part to Oprah and many of her guests, friends and book club books she promotes through her TV shows. New Age spirituality keep coming with every New Season, promoting a new age spirituality and pluralism that many may not truly know what is being served up theologically and why these teachings are not consistent and contradict Christianity. If you are unfamiliar with how Oprah and her guests beliefs differ from orthodox Christian beliefs this book will give you some basics on the theology and doctrines being taught and how to Stand Firm in the Faith and discern the differences.

Books and Authors such as “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne’s, James Ray, Elizabeth Gilbert author of “Eat, Pray, Love, Eckhart Tolle author of “A New Earth” and Marianne Williamson, and others, literally were skyrocketed to fame with appearances on the Oprah Show, and their book sales are in the millions.

Oprah draws millions of followers due to her likeable personality, her generosity and down-to-earth charm. With it being reported in the news today of Oprah’s possible consideration of a move of her program to Los Angeles, she may have more influence then ever. This is a good book to give to a friend that may be dabbling with New Age spirituality. There are also discussion questions in the back of the book which makes it great for study groups.

After reading the book, there could not be enough said about discerning what Oprah Winfrey and her guests are promoting, and it is consistent with what the teaching found says to do: 1 John 4:1 “Beloved do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

Josh McDowell is the Author of 110 books including the best sellers More than a Carpenter and New Evidence that Demands a Verdict.

Dave Sterrett has ministered to students and educators with Josh McDowell in Russia, Poland, and the United States. Sterrett also partners with Probe Ministries International in Plano, Texas and teaches on Christ-centered living and Christian apologetics at conferences, schools and churches.

Christian Love and Responsibility

Love, the Ultimate Apologetic: The Heart of Christian Witness
What is it about Christianity's position on love that is different than that of other belief systems and world religions?

This book presents the uniqueness of Christian love. Parts of this book are written in a narrative that establishes the topical study for discussion in each chapter, with the Author expanding on explaining an apologetic responds for Christian love and belief in the gospel.  We must stand firm in the faith without compromising the truth, and this can be done in love.

Art Lindsley gives an apologetic for the powerful witness of Christian love and gives a comparison with other worldviews.  Each chapter’s topic is best summed up like this:

Love is never sure apart from commitment
Love is never sane apart from conscious
Love is never safe apart from character
Love is never stimulated apart from community
Love is never seized apart from courage

The sub-title of the book - “The heart of the Christian Witness” reveals our responsibility as believers to proclaim hope to those who do not know Christ as their Savior and to apologetically defend the gospel in a way that is loving and selfless. The Author also touches on our relationships with other Christians, and points out that it is essential that we demonstrate love and forgiveness for one another. The holds some valuable insights on how to dialogue respectfully and lovingly with those who are atheist or new agers. Although the book is listed as Christian theology, there may be better books addressing this, but in all, it was a good read. 1 Corinthians 16:13,14 “Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.”

Faith Is Not Without Reason

Time for Truth: Living Free in a World of Lies, Hype, and Spin

Os Guinness addresses the moral and ethical issues of our times with exact precision and simplicity. The right questions are asked and answered in this book. Os Guinness sincere respect for the Truth found in Scripture comes across in his writing, and makes the reading and learning about truth stimulating and challenging for believers, as well as good reading for those outside the Christian Faith. He makes the complexity found in some terminology and philosophies easier to understand in his writing and illustrations.

As an example, in one chapter Guinness explains why ‘Reason’ is not excluded from our relationship and faith in God. He shows why this can be a pitfall for those who rely on feelings, experiences, and preferences. Guinness says this about truth and reason and the Christian today:

“Whereas both the Bible and the best thinkers of Christian history invite seekers to put their faith in God because the message conveying that invitation is true, countless Christians today believe for various other reasons. For instance, they believe faith is true “because it works” (pragmatism), because they “feel it is true in their experience” (subjectivism), because they sincerely believe it is “true for them” (relativism), and so on. For some of these Christians the deficiency comes from bad teaching. For others the motive is escape. Retreating into the fortress of personal experience, they can pull up the drawbridge of faith and feel impregnable to reason. But for all of them the outcome is sickly faith deprived of the rude vigor of truth.” (Pg. 78)

To sum up the importance of truth and reality for the Christian, the Author states it very well, “truth matters infinitely and ultimately because it is a question of the trustworthiness of God himself. This book will challenge you to seek the truth and what it means to live it. It was a most interesting and rewarding book to read. Recommended Reading.

Os Guinness is an internationally known speaker and senior fellow of the Trinity Forum in McLean, Virginia. He is the author of many books.

Loving in a way the world can see

The Mark of Jesus
Christians need to be aware of how our actions look to the world, we also need to stand firm in the faith and be ready always to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence. (1 Peter 3:15). That is a summation of what this book is about. The Authors teach much to be considered, studied, and thought about. The book covers the Bible’s meaning of ‘love’ and how we as Christians are to love our neighbors, even when it seems impossible, and gives reasonable and scriptural examples to apply.

The book goes over the biblical definition of evangelical ‘unity’, and tells us “Unity” must be based upon the truths found in scripture, and not for purely humanistic reasons.” Some very good points were made in this chapter that are worthy of further study. It also covers how to respond when the world calls us hypocrites. Christians are to be living lives of peace and righteousness that testify to the redeeming power of Christ. This in fact shows that we as Christians bear the mark of Jesus.

Observable ‘love’ is seen by how Christians treat one another before a watching world. Most Christians will tell you they believe in The Fundamentals of The Christian Faith, (those things which are essential to our beliefs from biblical principles ). But they are quick to be divisive when it comes to agreeing that they are not fundamentalists! Some Christians mistakenly have taken the position that believing the ‘Fundamentals’ that are taught from scripture, makes them an Extremist, which is far from the case and is not an accurate appraisal. The authors point out that Evangelicals in the last recent decade don’t want to be associated with the name; “Fundamentalists” or “Fundamentals of the Faith,” but the ‘Fundamentals of the Faith are and have been a distinguishing quality of Christianity and Evangelicalism.

When Christians Roamed the Earth

Critical Issues examined biblically

Is the Bible-Believing Church headed for extinction? This is the question asked on the front cover. This book encourages the believer to hold fast to the authority of Scripture against the tide of opposition from critics on the biblical account of Genesis.

Topics covered in this book are: how evolution has been used in public schools to subvert belief in God and a biblical view of creation, documenting evolution’s racism origin, quoting from it’s founders, evidence for the flood, the role of evolution in our culture, evolution in religions like the new age and those who pioneered it’s spread, the impact of evolutionary thought on science and technology and more.

There is a whole chapter on documenting the Christian Church’s departure from it’s historical position on creationism and themes in Genesis, (good reading), which covers: original sin, the flood of Noah, and the dispersion of people/languages. Each chapter is written by a different author in their field of study.

Our ‘evolutionized-culture’ will determine our future if the Christian remains silent in their biblical beliefs. For those Christian critics of apologetics who think reasoning from the scriptures is a waste of time or usurping the Holy Spirit; Christians are commanded from scripture to have an answer for the hope that is in you - 1 Peter 3:15. We are told to be salt and light in this world and to defend the Faith. (Matt 5:13-15, Jude 3)

The Truth Behind the Secret

What's "The Secret" not telling you?  (This Review is based on the Book Format)

The book “The Secret” has been selling in the millions. Everyone from Oprah to Larry King have had the contributing teachers from the book as guest on their TV programs. This book really breaks down what the Secret is all about.

What you quickly discover by the 3rd chapter of this book is--- the real secret is: who’s secret it was, (Hicks) and who’s message it originally belongs to. You learn that the message and teachings of “The Secret” is called: ’The Law of Attraction’ and was a channeled message through Esther Hicks by an Entity know as Abraham. Now how creepy is that?   Is this “Secret” really something a Christian wants to buy into? And if so, you just might get more than you bargained for. This and other spiritual concerns are discussed in this book.

Without a true understanding of Christian meditation, (which differs noticeably) from what is presented in “The Secret” a Christian could be easily mislead into metaphysical practices with harmful results. As the chapters go on, the Authors take the claims of health and prosperity made in the book “The Secret”, and examine the scientific claims of the “Law of Attraction” and reveal what a panel of Scientists have to say about this, and also examine the medical claims proposed by the book ‘The Secret’.

The Authors of this book reveal that: “The Secret” met it’s early success in the Mind Science churches, and at metaphysical bookstores. The authors write that TIME Magazine reported---"that before “The Secret” was a mainstream hit, it was selling briskly at New Age bookstores and New Thought Churches like Unity and Agape (Beckwith’s church)".

As to “The Secret’s origin of Religious teachings, it turns out that the booklist and the teachers Rhonda Byrne’s quotes in “The Secret” reveal almost all anyone needs to know. The teachings come out of the Mind Science religions, New Thought, and Christian Science and Unity. The doctrines practiced in Christian Science have been known to have dangerous consequences. Christian Science teaches that illness and suffering is an illusion. For the Biblical Christian, “The Secret” and it’s associated teachings should be Avoided. You can read the biblical warnings from the Bible from Deuteronomy 18:9-13.

The Sufficiency of Scripture

Is that YOU LORD?  Hearing The Voice of the LORD

There is a popular teaching these days that instructs people to seek within to hear the ‘voice of God’, they listen to their feelings promptings, and hunches to guide them in making life’s decisions, and listen to an ‘inaudible’, ‘inner voice‘, they say to know the ‘will of God’ for their lives.

This book will challenge the Christian reader’s said professed confidence in the word of God because once someone has omitted Scripture as the final authority, the person has no way left for truly testing or knowing if something is of God or not. This can become a serious situation for a Christian that very often makes them vulnerable to false teachings, confusion, and heartache.

When Jesus was tempted by the devil in Matt 4:4, He said; “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God”. In the 4th chapter, 3 times Jesus says “It is written”. Scripture is the final authority.

The author has written an excellent book in a Q & A format that deals with the vital matter of hearing God’s voice, godly decision making, callings, and what God’s Will is for the Christian, and gives us a sound biblical way of obeying God’s Will and practicing biblical guidance in our lives. 2 Timothy 3:16,17 says: “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” The Scriptures are sufficient - and are a sure foundation.
